VISIT MAGHREB / Tours / 7-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga
Quick answer
A week of desert and the south from Marrakech: Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge and two nights in Merzouga, then back through the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate. Plus a free day in Merzouga and a city day in Marrakech. 7 days · 6 nights · from € 949 per person · Private tour.
This 7-day Marrakech desert tour is a private Morocco desert tour starting and ending in Marrakech. The route runs from Marrakech through Aït Ben Haddou, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, Merzouga / Erg Chebbi and back to Marrakech. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver, only with your own group, you set the pace, and you stay in hand-picked riads and hotels along the way.
The best part is the desert itself. In Merzouga you swap the car for camels and take a camel ride in Erg Chebbi at sunset, then spend the night in a desert camp in Erg Chebbi with dinner and Berber music by the fire. Wake up early for the sunrise over the dunes — the quietest hour of the whole trip — and try sandboarding before the ride back to the village.
The best time to visit Merzouga is March to May and September to November, when the days are warm and the crowds are thinner. The tour runs all year. Prices start at € 949 per person, and the exact price is in the quote you get after your enquiry — it depends on your group size and the season.
1 / 5High Atlas in Morocco
The Red City — Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia mosque and the souks of the medina.
The clay ksar on the old caravan road, a UNESCO site made famous by films — walk the alleys and climb to the top.
A valley of rose gardens and red rock, where the road winds between the cliffs and the kasbahs.
Walk between 300-metre rock walls in the narrowest part of the gorge — the most dramatic canyon in Morocco.
Ride camels into the dunes at sunset and sleep in a desert camp under the stars — the high sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, up to 150 m.
A village of Gnawa musicians at the edge of the dunes — tea, music and a look at desert life.
This Morocco desert tour starts in Marrakech and crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 m. After the pass the road reaches Ait Ben Haddou, a village of clay buildings that is worth a walk and a look from the hill above it. From there the drive continues through Ouarzazate into the Dades Valley, where palm groves line the road. You spend the night in a hotel or riad in the Dades Valley, with dinner included.
The road follows the Dades Valley to Todra Gorge, where there is time for a walk between the high rock walls. From the gorge the drive continues east to Merzouga, at the edge of the dunes of Erg Chebbi. In the late afternoon you ride camels into the dunes as the sun goes down. The night is spent in the desert camp, with dinner included.
This is a free day in Merzouga, with no fixed programme. You can walk in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, visit the village of Khamlia, try sandboarding on the sand slopes, or simply rest in camp. The day is yours to use as you like, at your own pace. You spend a second night in the desert camp or in a hotel at the edge of the dunes, with dinner included.
The road leaves Merzouga and runs through Rissani and the Draa Valley towards Ouarzazate. The Draa Valley is a long line of palm groves, with small villages along the river. The drive is relaxed, with views over the groves most of the way. You arrive in Ouarzazate and spend the night there, with dinner included.
This is a free day in Ouarzazate, with no fixed programme. You can walk to the Taourirt kasbah and look around the town at your own pace. If you like, you can also visit the film studios in Ouarzazate. You spend the night in Ouarzazate, with dinner included.
The return drive runs from Ouarzazate over the High Atlas to Marrakech. The road climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 m, then drops down through the mountain villages to the city. You arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon and settle into your riad in the medina. Dinner is included.
The last day is a guided walk through the medina of Marrakech. You see Jemaa el-Fna, the Koutoubia mosque from outside, and the souks, and if you like, the Jardin Majorelle. There is time to look around before the tour ends. Transfer is arranged as planned.
The from-price is per person for the tour as described. The exact price depends on your travel dates, group size and hotels — it falls as the group grows. Your quote after the enquiry is the price that counts.

“An amazing desert ride — the sunset and sunrise will stay with you forever, and the staff is always there for you. There is a lot of road to cover by car, but the camel ride repays your patience. We stopped in lovely places with good food along the way. Strongly recommended.”

“The Sahara is a magical place, and I couldn't have asked for better hosts. I arrived late and missed my sunset camel ride, but Hassan arranged a morning ride instead — and the dawn was well worth the early alarm. I loved a day in the desert with Ibrahim: the landscape, the desert plants and animals, the people and history, and Gnaoua music. Ibrahim is also a fantastic cook — he made us a fresh picnic lunch in the shade of a great tamarisk tree. Back at camp in time for a magnificent sunset, a delicious meal and music around the campfire, then glittering stars. Hassan's communication was excellent throughout. A small family business, and it shows in the care they bring to every moment.”
