Quick answer

Our desert camp sits between the dunes of Erg Chebbi, outside Merzouga. Big Berber tents with real beds and private bathrooms, dinner in the restaurant tent, Berber music around the fire, and a candlelit dinner out in the dunes. This is where you sleep on our Merzouga desert tours.

About this tour

Our desert camp is a luxury Berber camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes, a short camel ride from Merzouga village. The dunes here rise up to 150 metres, and the camp sits in a hollow between them, out of the wind and out of sight of the road. You arrive on a camel at sunset, as the sand turns gold, and the camp appears between the dunes: tents, rugs, a fire lit, and dinner on the way.

This is not a tent with a mattress on the sand. The tents are large and tall, with real beds, warm bedding, rugs on the floor and a light overhead. Every tent has its own private bathroom, with a toilet and a washbasin. You sleep in a bed, under a roof of canvas, with the dunes all around you. It is the comfortable way to spend a night in the Sahara, and it is the camp our honeymoon and luxury tours use.

Dinner is cooked at camp. You eat in the restaurant tent, at tables set with cloths, or out in the dunes under a candlelit arch. The food is Moroccan: tajine, bread, salads and mint tea, cooked on site. After dinner the guides play drums and sing around the fire, and then the night belongs to the sky. Far from any town, the stars are bright, and the Milky Way runs overhead.

The camp is the overnight stop on our Merzouga desert tours. Tours from Marrakech and from Fes end with a night here, and our 7-day honeymoon tour spends two nights in camp. You can also book a night in camp on its own, as an overnight desert camp with a camel ride, if you are already in Merzouga. The best months are March to May and September to November, when the days are warm and the nights are cool.

In the morning you wake early, climb a dune to watch the sun rise, and have breakfast at camp before riding back to Merzouga on your camel in the morning light. Some guests add a quad bike ride, a sandboard session or a second night in the dunes. Tell us when you enquire and we will build the night into your tour.

Big Berber tents with a real bed, warm bedding and rugs — and your own private bathroom with a toilet and washbasin. No shared facilities, no mattress on the sand.

Dinner in the restaurant tent

Dinner is cooked at camp and served in the restaurant tent, at tables set with cloths. Tajine, bread, salads and mint tea, cooked on site.

Candlelit dinner in the dunes

On request we set a candlelit dinner out in the dunes, under an arch of candles. It is the dinner our honeymoon guests remember most.

Berber music around the fire

After dinner the guides play drums and sing around the fire. The music is simple, and the night is quiet once it ends.

Stargazing in the Sahara

Far from any town, the sky is dark and full of stars. The Milky Way is clear on most nights. Step outside your tent and look up.

Camel ride in, camel ride out

You arrive on a camel at sunset and ride back to Merzouga in the morning light. The ride is part of the night, not just the way there.

Candlelit dinner in the dunes

On request we set a candlelit dinner out in the dunes, under an arch of candles, with a table for two and dinner served at the table. Tell us when you enquire.

Breakfast is served at camp in the morning, after the sunrise walk. Bread, jam, eggs and coffee or tea, eaten with the dunes around you.

Things to do at camp

Camel ride at sunset

Ride out from Merzouga on a camel as the sun goes down. The dunes turn gold, and the camp appears between them. Included in every night in camp.

Sandboarding

Take a board up a dune and ride down the sand. It is simple, it is fast, and it is the best way to play on a dune.

Quad biking

Ride a quad bike out into the dunes around the camp. Ask us when you enquire and we will add it to your night.

Stargazing

The sky over Erg Chebbi is dark and full of stars. After the music ends, step outside and look up — the Milky Way is clear on most nights.

Sunrise over the dunes

Wake early and climb a dune to watch the sun rise. The light moves across the sand, and the dunes change colour minute by minute.

Getting there

From Marrakech

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, a 9- to 10-hour drive spread over two days. Our tours from Marrakech reach the dunes on the second day, and the night in camp is the overnight stop.

From Fes

From Fes it is about 470 km, a 7- to 8-hour drive. Our tours from Fes reach Merzouga on the first day and spend the night in camp.

From Errachidia

Errachidia airport is about 1.5 hours from Merzouga, around 130 km. If you fly in, we meet you at the airport and drive you to the dunes.

Good to know

Best months

March to May and September to November are the best months: warm days and cool nights. Summer days are very hot, and winter nights are cold.

Nights are cold

Desert nights are cold, especially from November to February. The tents have warm bedding, but bring a warm layer to sleep in.

What to pack

Bring a small overnight bag: a warm layer, sunscreen, a scarf for the sand, and closed shoes. Leave the rest of your luggage in Merzouga.

Facilities

Every tent has its own private bathroom, with a toilet and a washbasin. There is no wifi in the dunes, and phone signal is weak — the night is for the stars, not the screen.

Booking a night in camp

The night in camp is the overnight stop on our Merzouga desert tours, and you can also book it on its own. Send us an enquiry with your dates and we will give you the price and the options.

How much does it cost?

A night in a standard camp starts from €40 per person, with a camel ride, dinner and breakfast. A night in our luxury camp is priced on enquiry, and it is included in our honeymoon and luxury tours. Send us your dates and we will give you the exact price.

Questions, answered

Where is your desert camp?

Our camp is in the Erg Chebbi dunes, outside Merzouga village in south-east Morocco. It sits in a hollow between the dunes, a short camel ride from the village, out of the wind and out of sight of the road.

What is the difference between your luxury camp and a standard camp?

Both sit in the same dunes and share the same dinner, music and stars. A standard camp is simple — a canvas tent with a mattress and blankets, and shared facilities. Our luxury camp has large tents, a real bed, warm bedding, rugs, and a private bathroom with a toilet and a washbasin in every tent.

Do the tents have private bathrooms?

Yes. Every tent in our luxury camp has its own private bathroom, with a toilet and a washbasin. You do not share facilities with other guests.

How do I get to the camp?

You ride in on a camel from Merzouga at sunset, and ride back in the morning. If you arrive by car, we meet you at the edge of the village and the camels take you the rest of the way. Errachidia airport is about 1.5 hours away.

What is for dinner at the camp?

Dinner is Moroccan food cooked at camp: tajine, bread, salads and mint tea, served in the restaurant tent. On request we set a candlelit dinner out in the dunes, under an arch of candles.

Is there music at the camp?

Yes. After dinner the guides play drums and sing around the fire. It is simple Berber music, and the night is quiet once it ends.

Can I see the stars from the camp?

Yes. Far from any town, the sky over Erg Chebbi is dark and full of stars, and the Milky Way is clear on most nights. Step outside your tent after dinner and look up.

Is a night in the camp suitable for children?

Yes. Children can ride a camel with an adult and sleep in the camp. Family tents sleep three, and we can plan the night for your family. Ask us about age limits when you enquire.

What should I bring to the camp?

A small overnight bag: a warm layer for the night, sunscreen, a scarf for the sand, and closed shoes. Bring a torch for the night and a camera for the sunset and the stars. Leave the rest of your luggage in Merzouga.

When is the best time to stay in the camp?

March to May and September to November. The days are warm, the nights are cool, and the light at sunset and sunrise is at its best. Summer days are very hot, and winter nights are cold.

Can I book just one night in the camp?

Yes. The night in camp is the overnight stop on our Merzouga desert tours, and you can also book it on its own as an overnight desert camp with a camel ride. Send us an enquiry with your dates.

How much does a night in your camp cost?

A night in a standard camp starts from €40 per person, with a camel ride, dinner and breakfast. A night in our luxury camp is priced on enquiry, and it is included in our honeymoon and luxury tours. Send us your dates and we will give you the exact price.
