Quick answer

One night in the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You ride out from Merzouga on a camel as the sun goes down, eat dinner in a Berber camp, and wake to sunrise over the sand. Duration: 1 night · Merzouga, Erg Chebbi · from € 40 per person.

About this tour

One night in the Erg Chebbi dunes is the heart of a Merzouga trip. You ride out from the village on a camel in the late afternoon, as the sun drops and the sand turns gold. The dunes here rise up to 150 metres, and your camp waits between them — tents, rugs, a fire lit, and dinner on the way.

The camp is a Berber desert camp. Dinner is cooked at camp, and after dark the guides play drums and sing around the fire. Then the night belongs to the sky: far from any town, the stars are bright and the Milky Way runs overhead. You sleep in a tent, on a mattress with blankets, and wake to sunrise over the dunes.

There are two kinds of camp: standard and luxury. A standard camp is simple and comfortable — a canvas tent with a mattress and blankets, and shared facilities. A luxury camp has larger tents, a real bed, and private facilities. Both sit in the same dunes, eat the same dinner and watch the same stars — the difference is the level of comfort. Ask us about the options when you enquire.

The morning starts early. You climb a dune to watch the sun rise, have breakfast at camp, and ride back to Merzouga on your camel in the morning light. The night in camp is the overnight part of most Merzouga desert tours, but you can also book it on its own if you are already in the village. The best months are March to May and September to November.
