Quick answer

Four days from Fes to Marrakech: through the Ziz Valley to Merzouga, a night in the desert camp, then Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley over Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakech. The one-way route for travellers who arrive in Fes and travel on from Marrakech. 4 days · 3 nights · from € 529 per person · Private tour.

About this tour

This 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour is a private Morocco desert tour from Fes to Marrakech. The route runs from Fes through Ifrane, Ziz Valley, Merzouga / Erg Chebbi, Khamlia to Marrakech. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver, only with your own group, you set the pace, and you stay in hand-picked riads and hotels along the way.

The best part is the desert itself. In Merzouga you swap the car for camels and take a camel ride in Erg Chebbi at sunset, then spend the night in a desert camp in Erg Chebbi with dinner and Berber music by the fire. Wake up early for the sunrise over the dunes — the quietest hour of the whole trip — and try sandboarding before the ride back to the village.

The best time to visit Merzouga is March to May and September to November, when the days are warm and the crowds are thinner. The tour runs all year. The price for this tour is confirmed on enquiry — send us your dates and group size and we send you a quote.

Ifrane

A mountain town in the Middle Atlas, called the Switzerland of Morocco for its chalets and cedar forest.

Ziz Valley

The Ziz Valley — a green line of palm groves cutting through the desert on the road to Merzouga.

Merzouga / Erg Chebbi

Ride camels into the dunes at sunset and sleep in a desert camp under the stars — the high sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, up to 150 m.

Khamlia

A village of Gnawa musicians at the edge of the dunes — tea, music and a look at desert life.

Todra Gorge

Walk between 300-metre rock walls in the narrowest part of the gorge — the most dramatic canyon in Morocco.

Day by day

Day 1 — Fes to Ifrane, the Ziz Valley and Merzouga

The Morocco desert tour starts in Fes, with a morning drive through Ifrane and the cedar forest near Azrou. The road then drops into the Ziz Valley, where the green palm groves run along the river between dry, rocky hills. From there the route continues south to Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You spend the night in a hotel at the edge of the dunes, ready for the desert day ahead.

~470 km · 7-8 h Night in Merzouga · Hotel Dinner
Day 2 — Merzouga: Khamlia, dunes and the desert camp

The day stays in Merzouga, in the Erg Chebbi desert. You visit the village of Khamlia, then drive out to the dunes, which rise up to 150 metres above the sand plain. In the afternoon you ride camels into the dunes at sunset, a slow ride with time to take in the light and the quiet. The night is spent in the desert camp, with dinner in camp.

~50 km · 1.5 h Night in Merzouga · Desert camp Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 — Merzouga to Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley

The morning starts with sunrise over the dunes and breakfast in the desert camp. Then the drive leaves Merzouga behind and heads west to Todra Gorge, where the road runs between high rock walls. From the gorge the route continues into the Dades Valley, past kasbahs and palm groves. You spend the night in a hotel in the Dades Valley.

~270 km · 4 h Night in Dades Valley · Hotel Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 — Dades Valley to Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech

The last day follows the Dades Valley west to Ouarzazate and on to Ait Ben Haddou, the old ksar of clay houses above the river. From there the road climbs over the High Atlas and the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres. The drive down the other side brings you into Marrakech, where the tour ends in the late afternoon.

~350 km · 6.5 h Breakfast
