VISIT MAGHREB / Tours / 6-Day Marrakech, Merzouga Desert & Essaouira Tour
Quick answer
Six days: first the desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, then back to Marrakech and on to the Atlantic coast at Essaouira, with a free day there. Desert and coast in one trip, without the imperial cities. 6 days · 5 nights · from € 949 per person · Private tour.
This 6-day Marrakech to Essaouira desert tour is a private Morocco desert tour from Marrakech to Essaouira. The route runs from Marrakech through Aït Ben Haddou, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, Merzouga / Erg Chebbi to Essaouira. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver, only with your own group, you set the pace, and you stay in hand-picked riads and hotels along the way.
The best part is the desert itself. In Merzouga you swap the car for camels and take a camel ride in Erg Chebbi at sunset, then spend the night in a desert camp in Erg Chebbi with dinner and Berber music by the fire. Wake up early for the sunrise over the dunes — the quietest hour of the whole trip — and try sandboarding before the ride back to the village.
The best time to visit Merzouga is March to May and September to November, when the days are warm and the crowds are thinner. The tour runs all year. The price for this tour is confirmed on enquiry — send us your dates and group size and we send you a quote.
1 / 5Port and city walls of Essaouira on the Atlantic
The Red City — Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia mosque and the souks of the medina.
The clay ksar on the old caravan road, a UNESCO site made famous by films — walk the alleys and climb to the top.
A valley of rose gardens and red rock, where the road winds between the cliffs and the kasbahs.
Walk between 300-metre rock walls in the narrowest part of the gorge — the most dramatic canyon in Morocco.
Ride camels into the dunes at sunset and sleep in a desert camp under the stars — the high sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, up to 150 m.
Morocco's longest valley: a line of palm groves and kasbahs between the desert and the Atlas.
The tour leaves Marrakech and climbs over the High Atlas and the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres. On the other side the road reaches Ait Ben Haddou, the old ksar of clay houses above the river. From there the drive continues into the Dades Valley, past kasbahs and palm groves. You spend the night in a hotel in the Dades Valley.
From the Dades Valley the road leads to Todra Gorge, where it runs between high rock walls. The drive then turns east, across dry plains, to Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon you ride camels into the dunes at sunset. The night is spent in the desert camp, with dinner in camp.
The morning starts with sunrise over the dunes and breakfast in the desert camp. Then the drive leaves Merzouga and follows the Draa Valley west, past palm groves and kasbahs. The route continues to Ouarzazate, the town at the edge of the desert. You spend the night in a hotel in Ouarzazate.
The return drive from Ouarzazate crosses the High Atlas and the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres. The road winds down the other side into the plain around Marrakech. You spend the night in a riad in Marrakech.
The drive leaves Marrakech and heads west to the Atlantic coast, about 190 kilometres to Essaouira. The road runs west across the plain to the sea. In the afternoon you walk through the medina of Essaouira and along the harbour, with its blue fishing boats. You spend the night in Essaouira.
The last day in Essaouira is free, with no fixed plan. You can walk on the beach, wander the medina, or sit by the harbour and eat at the fish restaurants there. Departure is as planned, when it suits your onward travel.
The from-price is per person for the tour as described. The exact price depends on your travel dates, group size and hotels — it falls as the group grows. Your quote after the enquiry is the price that counts.

“An amazing desert ride — the sunset and sunrise will stay with you forever, and the staff is always there for you. There is a lot of road to cover by car, but the camel ride repays your patience. We stopped in lovely places with good food along the way. Strongly recommended.”

“The Sahara is a magical place, and I couldn't have asked for better hosts. I arrived late and missed my sunset camel ride, but Hassan arranged a morning ride instead — and the dawn was well worth the early alarm. I loved a day in the desert with Ibrahim: the landscape, the desert plants and animals, the people and history, and Gnaoua music. Ibrahim is also a fantastic cook — he made us a fresh picnic lunch in the shade of a great tamarisk tree. Back at camp in time for a magnificent sunset, a delicious meal and music around the campfire, then glittering stars. Hassan's communication was excellent throughout. A small family business, and it shows in the care they bring to every moment.”

“What an experience! Thank you for showing us the best of the desert: a camel ride at sunset and a night in a super-comfortable tent. The evening meal, which I expected to be simple, was hearty and the best we ate in all of Morocco — the cheese tajine was wonderful. Thank you for adapting to our family when one of us was injured before the trip and came to the camp by jeep instead of by camel. Our two children will remember this Sahara discovery for the rest of their lives. I recommend it without hesitation.”
