VISIT MAGHREB / Tours / Morocco with Kids: 7-Day Private Family Trip to Merzouga
Quick answer
Seven days in Morocco as a family, private and at your own pace: Marrakech, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and the desert at Merzouga. Short camel rides, sandboarding for children, free afternoons. Child prices on request, by age. 7 days · 6 nights · from € 849 per person · Private tour.
This 7-day Marrakech desert tour is a private Morocco desert tour starting and ending in Marrakech. The route runs from Marrakech through Aït Ben Haddou, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, Merzouga / Erg Chebbi and back to Marrakech. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver, only with your own group, you set the pace, and you stay in hand-picked riads and hotels along the way.
This Morocco family tour works well with children: short drives, stops to stretch legs, camels in the desert and a camp night the kids will talk about for years. The driver keeps the pace relaxed and the days are never too long. The camel ride in Erg Chebbi is gentle and the guides help the children onto the camels.
The best time to visit Merzouga is March to May and September to November, when the days are warm and the crowds are thinner. The tour runs all year. Prices start at € 849 per person, and the exact price is in the quote you get after your enquiry — it depends on your group size and the season.
1 / 5Camel ride in the desert of Merzouga
The Red City — Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia mosque and the souks of the medina.
The clay ksar on the old caravan road, a UNESCO site made famous by films — walk the alleys and climb to the top.
A valley of rose gardens and red rock, where the road winds between the cliffs and the kasbahs.
Walk between 300-metre rock walls in the narrowest part of the gorge — the most dramatic canyon in Morocco.
Ride camels into the dunes at sunset and sleep in a desert camp under the stars — the high sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, up to 150 m.
Morocco's longest valley: a line of palm groves and kasbahs between the desert and the Atlas.
You arrive in Marrakech and we pick you up at the airport. The night is in a riad in the medina. In the afternoon you take a first walk together: Jemaa el-Fna and the lanes of the souks. Dinner is included.
The Morocco desert tour starts with the drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas. The road climbs to 2,260 m, then drops down to Ait Ben Haddou, where the children can run around the old clay buildings. From there the route runs on through Ouarzazate into the Dades Valley, where you sleep in a hotel or riad. Dinner is included.
The drive follows the Dades Valley to Todra Gorge, where the road runs between high rock walls and you can stop for a short walk. Then it is on to Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon you take a short camel ride at sunset, easy for the children, and ride into the dunes. The night is in the desert camp, with dinner and music by the fire.
The morning is for the dunes: sandboarding down the slopes and another camel ride for the children. The sand is soft, so the falls are part of the fun. The afternoon is free, in camp or at the hotel by the dunes. You spend the night in the camp, with dinner included.
After breakfast in camp you leave the dunes behind and drive back through the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate. Palm groves line the road for much of the way. On request you can stop at the film studios in Ouarzazate. You spend the night in Ouarzazate, with dinner included.
The road back to Marrakech crosses the High Atlas again, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. The drive takes most of the day, with stops on the way. You arrive in the late afternoon and sleep in a riad in the medina. Dinner is included.
The last morning is for the Jardin Majorelle, a calm garden with paths the children will like. Then we take you to the airport or your hotel, as planned. The tour ends here.
The from-price is per person for the tour as described. The exact price depends on your travel dates, group size and hotels — it falls as the group grows. Your quote after the enquiry is the price that counts.
Marrakech to Merzouga: about 560 km, 9–10 hours of driving, split over two days.
Night in a desert camp in Erg Chebbi: beds, blankets, dinner and music by the fire. A luxury camp is available on request.
Pack light for the camp: a small overnight bag, warm layers for the evening, sun protection and good walking shoes.
Your own vehicle and driver, only your group. No strangers, no fixed departure dates, no rushing.
From about 5 years old. The camel ride can be shortened or replaced by a 4x4 drive to the camp.
That depends on the age and the room setup. State the children's ages in the enquiry and we will give you the exact price.
Yes, we provide child seats on request. Please state the children's ages in the enquiry.
March to May and September to November are the best months: warm days, cool desert nights and clear skies. The tour runs all year. In summer (June to August) the desert is very hot, over 45°C, so the camel ride and the camp stay are planned for the cooler hours.
7 days is the right length for this route: starting and ending in Marrakech, at a relaxed pace, with the desert night in Erg Chebbi and time at each stop. If you have more time, ask us to add a day.

“What an experience! Thank you for showing us the best of the desert: a camel ride at sunset and a night in a super-comfortable tent. The evening meal, which I expected to be simple, was hearty and the best we ate in all of Morocco — the cheese tajine was wonderful. Thank you for adapting to our family when one of us was injured before the trip and came to the camp by jeep instead of by camel. Our two children will remember this Sahara discovery for the rest of their lives. I recommend it without hesitation.”

“Five Spanish friends on our Morocco with Kids: 7-Day Private Family Trip to Merzouga with Visit Maghreb, recommended by a friend. They arranged everything professionally, from transport to stays. Our guide Ali was an amazing driver who showed us the beauty of Morocco. The best moment was in the Sahara: a camel ride at sunset, a night in a luxurious desert camp and delicious food. We had a great time — unforgettable memories. We will recommend you to our friends and family.”

“An amazing desert ride — the sunset and sunrise will stay with you forever, and the staff is always there for you. There is a lot of road to cover by car, but the camel ride repays your patience. We stopped in lovely places with good food along the way. Strongly recommended.”
